Euchre Ace

How to Play · Lesson 9 of 10

Partner Awareness

Learn to read partner's call and work together.

You Play as a Team

Euchre is a partnership game. Paying attention to your partner's cues will significantly help your chances of victory.

The goal is not to win tricks personally — it is to coordinate with your partner so both of you contribute based on the strengths of your hands.

When Partner Is Already Winning

If your partner played a card that is currently winning the trick (such as an Ace), do not play a strong card trying to win it unless you have a very strong reason to take the lead from him. Trumping in on your partner's ace or playing a king on a queen when you have a lower card is completely unnecessary because it doesn't change the outcome and you spent a strong card on it.

  • Follow with your lowest legal card to preserve your strong cards for a trick where it will change the outcome.
When your partner is winning a trick, only play strong if it improves the odds of winning the trick. Otherwise play your lowest legal card instead and save your power for another trick.

Support the Caller

When your partner calls trump, he is betting that your team can take at least 3 tricks. Your role is to protect the hand. If your partner didn't call the hand alone, he is counting on you to assist with at least one trick.

  • Throw off your lowest useless cards when partner is winning tricks.
  • Preserve anything that might take a later trick — strong trump or a side Ace can be the difference between a march and giving a trick away. Get ready to help your partner overcome the weaker parts of his hand.
  • If you have the lead and trump hasn't been led yet, on offense, lead trump into your partner's hand. When he is the caller, he most likely has the dominant hand in trump so leading trump can give him back the lead as well as bleed trump from your opponents. Early in the hand it is also beneficial to show your partner where the more powerful trump cards are like the right or left bower. Leading with those help him plan the rest of the hand better.

Watch for Clues Partner Doesn't Follow Suit

If your partner doesn't follow suit, that can give you valuable information on what to lead to give him the opportunity to trump in on a subsequent trick.

  • If your partner throws an off-suit card on a lead that isn't trump, he is telling you two things - that he is void in the led suit and that he might also be void in the suit he threw off (possibly sloughing a singleton suit to void it in his hand). These are good candidates to lead back to your partner if you think he still has trump to use.
